Ketamine Therapy

What Is Ketamine Therapy?

Ketamine therapy is a breakthrough treatment that can be used to treat mental health conditions that have proven resistant to usual medications. Ketamine has been used in medical settings for decades and has gained popularity for its ability to treat conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Ketamine is safe, FDA-approved, and has been used in hospitals for over 50 years. At Renewed Foundations, it is administered by our team of highly experienced professionals in Idaho Falls.

We've put together a treatment program that combines ketamine with psychotherapy before, during, and after your sessions, ensuring a world-class and responsible treatment approach.

How Ketamine Therapy Works

Ketamine works differently from regular antidepressants by hitting NMDA receptors in your brain, which helps form new neural pathways that can break you out of negative thought loops you’ve been stuck in for months or years.

Instead of taking weeks to build up in your system like most psychiatric meds, ketamine can provide much faster relief — sometimes within hours or days.

For those who have tried countless approaches with therapy and medication, ketamine’s efficiency can come as a relief. As your brain forms new patterns and responses, both therapy and personal work can become more effective.

Conditions We Treat With Ketamine

Our ketamine program is used to treat four main mental health conditions that have not found success with standard approaches and can potentially lead to breakthroughs.

Depression

Experience positive shifts in perspective in areas such as self-perception, relationships, and worldview.

Break out of repetitive worry cycles that feel impossible to escape.

Work through traumatic memories and experiences in a safe space.

Find relief from existential distress.

What to Expect During Treatment

Our approach has been developed with continual testing and is always in line with the most up-to-date medical science. Our program combines ketamine with world-leading therapeutic support throughout your entire experience as you take steps toward restoring your mental well-being.

Here’s how it works:

Intake (psychiatric and psychological)

The intake process helps us get to know your needs and expectations around ketamine treatment, screen for mental and medical diagnoses, and help develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. At Renewed Foundations, we take the time to understand what you’re going through so we can provide you with the support you need.

In-office preparation sessions

These sessions can help you focus on your mindset and intentions for treatment, build grounding skills, and ultimately prepare you to make the most out of your ketamine experience. This provides you with the chance to get to know our staff members and adjust to our environment, which can help you feel more relaxed and informed along the way.

Comfortable, supervised KAP settings

These are ketamine sessions with therapeutic support. Your therapist will act as a guide and an anchor as you experience the medicine. Each session will be unique, and we will work with you to support a balance of going inward with the medicine and working through insights and ideas that you can integrate into your life.

Integration sessions

You will meet with a therapist as you recall, digest, and process the insights that emerged through your ketamine journey. These sessions help to build upon and solidify meaningful and lasting changes in your life. We want you to have the freedom to take things at your own pace, and we will support you every step of the way.

Our typical program includes intake appointments, up to 2 preparation sessions, 6 KAP sessions, and 6 integration sessions. This provides you with a complete therapeutic experience that maximizes your chances of lasting improvement and gives you tools to maintain the progress you make during treatment.

FAQs About Ketamine Therapy

Is ketamine therapy legal?

Yes! Ketamine is a well-established medication that has been safely used for decades as both an anesthetic and a pain reliever. Classified as a dissociative anesthetic, it has been employed in surgical and pain management settings since receiving FDA approval in 1970. More recently, ketamine is being increasingly used off-label in clinical practice to treat a range of chronic, treatment-resistant mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other psychiatric disorders.

Ketamine is known for being a safe treatment method and has been used for surgical anesthesia at significantly greater doses without causing hypoventilation. While potential risks can arise in the case of any medication, our clients undergo close medical supervision in a controlled environment to help minimize any potential side effects.

At Renewed Foundations, our doses mostly lead to one of two types of experiences:

Out-of-body experiences (OBE) refer to feelings of total separation from an individual’s own body. This type of sensation leads to a reduction of ego defenses combined with a continued consciousness of self.

Empathogenic effect: With smaller, sub-psychedelic doses, this phenomenon can lead to a relaxed state, deeper awareness of one’s body, an increase in qualities such as compassion and empathy, and decreased ego defenses. In this state of comfort and openness, talk therapy can be beneficial.

Potential side effects can result, such as increased blood pressure; feelings of nausea; perception changes; differences in visual, auditory, and tactile processing; and sensations of floating, falling, or suspension in space. Individuals may experience changes in time perception or synesthesia (a crossover of senses). Other potential adverse effects may occur, including feeling dizzy or lightheaded, sedation, unclear or slowed speech, confusion, excitability, difficulty perceiving real objects, reduced sense of touch (even with one’s own body), decreased awareness of bodily functions like breathing, headaches, feelings of anxiety, and, though uncommon, vomiting.

The amount of necessary sessions varies from person to person and is dependent on individual goals and how one responds to the treatment. While some may benefit from a single session, others may require three to six. Some individuals return periodically for additional “booster sessions” over the course of several months or even years.

Recent studies on ketamine infusion therapy indicate that approximately 70% of individuals with treatment-resistant depression experience a positive response after just 1 to 3 treatments. Additionally, 30–60% report partial or full remission of depressive symptoms for varying durations. Repeated sessions tend to produce a cumulative therapeutic benefit.

We encourage you to continue seeing your regular therapist, and we will be happy to collaborate with your therapist if you so wish.
Your ketamine prescriber at Renewed Foundations will review your medications with you and help you come up with a plan for any medication changes that would help maximize your benefits.

Most insurances do not cover ketamine therapy. We do not bill your insurance at Renewed Foundations, but if requested, we will provide you with a copy of your superbill that you may submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

We are committed to the ethical application of ketamine therapy. If you still have questions, contact us for a free 15-minute consultation to learn more about ketamine, our clinic’s philosophy, and how our program could help you on your path towards feeling better and living better.
